MT FAIRCHEM BOGEY hijacked 20 JUL 0108UTC
Position of Attack: Lat 16:54N - Long 054:03E, Salalah Port/Oman (NSC Alert number 213/2011, IMB317-11 )
In the early hours of 20 August, the MV FAIRCHEM BOGEY was pirated off the Port of Salalah in Oman and has been taken towards the Somali coast. She was in ballast and anchor when hijack. The incident occurred two miles off the coast and well inside Omani territorial waters. An attack so close to the port is unusual for Somali pirates, although they have been driven back to waters around the Gulf of Aden and coast of Oman amid the ongoing Indian Ocean monsoon.
The incident shows that pirates will not necessarily be deterred by proximity to a well-patrolled port. MT Fairchem Bogey arrived on the Somalia coast and anchored just north of Bandar Beyla on Monday (22 Aug 11).

MT CPO CHINA was boarded 3 Jan 1040UTC
Position of Attack:15 48N 059 49E , approximately 330NM South East of Salalah, Oman (NSC)
Navy frigate HMAS Melbourne helped thwart a pirate attack on MT CPO China in the Arabian Sea. MT CPO China had been boarded by pirates at about 1030 UTC and issued a distress call. HMAS Melbourne responded to the call and steamed to the tanker in just over six hours. While approaching the CPO China, Melbourne’s Sea King helicopter launched and was able to deter the pirates taking control of the tanker. The pirates aborted their attack and left the vessel as the Melbourne arrived on the scene. The crew of CPO China had successfully secured themselves in the ship’s citadel (an anti-pirate stronghold) from where they could maintain satellite communications and control the ship. The engine controls and steering equipment for the tanker are located in the citadel.
HMAS Melbourne boarded the vessel on 4 Jan and found the pirates gone and all the crew safe.
